MONTE D’ACCODDI: A PREHISTORIC ALTAR UNIQUE IN THE MEDITERRANEAN
A few kilometers from the inhabited center of Sassari, along the State Road that leads from the city to Porto Torres, turning onto a small road marked by the signs for the monumental areas, you arrive in a place that represents, until now, something unique in Sardinia and throughout the Mediterranean.
The pre-Nuragic sanctuary of Monte d'Accoddi came back to light in 1952 thanks to the excavations conducted by Ercole Contu and, immediately, revealed unexpected peculiarities. Today it looks like a truncated pyramidal structure, assimilated by the archaeological world to the Mesopotamian ziqqurat, which extends over a vast plain and which gives the area a particular sense of sacredness. The name of the site derives from "Monte de Code" or hill of stones, as it appeared before the excavation, which later became Monte d'Accoddi.
What we see today is a second structure, which is dated between 3500 and 2900 BC. The first, incorporated within the current building, was painted with red ocher. Gone destroyed, perhaps due to a fire, it can be dated between 4000 and 3500 BC.
All around the so-called altar are preserved various testimonies and artifacts found on site, some from the surrounding land and gathered there to promote its protection and usability. An archaeological site usually open to the public and able to give unforgettable emotions together with a unique glimpse of the history of our island.
