TOWN MUSEUM – PALAZZO DI CITTA

From the iron-work balcony on the first floor of this building, a sixteenth century tradition is reenacted every year: at the end of the festival of the Descent of the Candlesticks.

The mayor and the head of the Gremio of the Massai (Guild of Landowners) carry out the rite of the “intregu”, basically a toast with the traditional "a zent'anni" (may you live a hundred years, the typical Sardinian toast), and be subject to the cheers or boos of the crowd, who pass judgment on their work of the last year.

The City Palace has a neoclassical façade that was built between 1826 and 1829 by the Piedmontese architect Giuseppe Cominotti. Today in its rooms it is possible to admire a museum exhibit divided into two sections: entering from Corso Vittorio Emanuele II in the west wing, a number of representations of the town culture and identity. From the ball room, through the foyer, visitors will enter the historic Civic Theatre, inspired by the Teatro Carignano in Turin. In the east wing of the palace, entered from Via Sebastiano Satta, is the tourist information office of Sassari and on the upper floors visitors will find a display of Sardinian costumes representing the traditional dress of daily life in the city and countryside. A hall holds the works of Eugenio Tavolara portraying two very important events in Sassari: The Carnival and Holy Week.
